Wow! This is not a handsome man. Actually, I think this is a John F. Kerry picture from his Yale days. Funny thing, though. His grades from college have been released to the Boston Globe, and it turns out they're a little lower than President Bush's were from his Yale days. I guess Kerry wasn't the superior intellect that his supporters smugly proclaimed him to be. I never bought the "nuance" crap, anyhow. To me, he was indecisive and always trying to be on both-sides in every issue so that he could always be "right." Of course, it also made him "wrong" on every issue, too. Bush, he just tries to make a good decision and he sticks to it if he thinks it was the right one. Articulate? No, Bush isn't. Bright, courageous, grounded and steady? You betcha! That's why he got my vote.

It's a complex world, though, and I feel queasy having a guy in office who prefers to wave off consideration of any issue more than a couple of levels deep. I'm hopeful McCain will be our guy in '08. I want blind stubbornness in my football coaches but not in the leader of what is essentially the planet.
It is a complex world. But, sometimes, we can overthink things too much and lose sight of some simple truths. For instance, Islamo-fascists cannot be negotiated with. They must be defeated. Preferably, by a unified group of civilized powers. But, I think that too many of us in the West have gotten soft and lazy and are too quick to rationalize and to try to "understand" what these savages are doing. While such considerations are possible in a free and modern society, sometimes we need to remember our more basic roots. We need to remember that human beings can be (and often are) brutal and violent creatures. This is just part of our nature. We constantly work to overcome it, but we shouldn't forget that it is part of our human-ness. And, some aren't working to overcome it. They just live it. Those are our enemy. They cannot be reasoned with. Their brutality must be matched. For those who are working to overcome it, we must work to help them along, so that we can work through differences and troubles. I think Bush knows this and is doing his best to keep fighting this enemy who must be fought this way. I only wish he was doing it more forcefully, myself. Thanks for posting.
